Spring Commuting - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

The Good

The weather! After a winter of bike commuting, those first warmer days feel like magic!

More people on bikes! While the bike trail can be a lonely place in the depths of winter, warmer temps bring out all kinds of folks.

Mother Nature is waking up! From budding leaves and greening grass to baby critters along the path, there is much to see and appreciate on your spring commutes.

The Bad

The weather! While spring brings warmer weather, it also brings wild swings in temperature. Be prepared for balmy mornings, blizzard-like afternoons and everything in between!

More people on bikes! Don't get me wrong, I LOVE to see more people on bikes. What I don't love is guys (it is almost always guys) in their race kits, dangerously buzzing commuters and other trail users. Don't be that guy. Bike bells are awesome, get one and use it! At the very least, a loud and clear 'On Your Left!' is a must. Don't be a ninja!

Mother Nature is waking up! While enjoying the return of spring, watch out for aggressive Canada Geese who will soon have a gaggle of goslings in tow. Also, warmer temps bring out the bugs along the Platte, making safety glasses (or shades with clear lenses) a necessary component of early morning rides.

The Ugly

While hard pressed to think of anything too bad about Spring commuting, do watch out for potholes! Spring brings an increase in the freeze and thaw cycles that create potholes. There are a few along one of the current detours on the South Platte that could swallow a car, let alone a bike!
