Riding when sick?

Reprinted from meganhottman.com blog post:

to ride, or not to ride? ...that is the question...when you're down and out with a head cold.  Which I presently, unfortunately, am.

There are many, many articles on this topic posted by cycling coaches and exercise gurus, all over the internet.

The common saying is, "if it's above the neck, it's ok to train, if it's below the neck, rest up."

A bit of exercise is considered good for strengthening your immune system, but too much can weaken you, making your cold or symptoms worse.  Bottom line, remember that training is catabolic in nature.  It breaks you down, on purpose. So if you feel like 100% of your body's energy needs to be spent fighting the bug that's got you down, don't engage in catabolic -er training -activities.  Training while sick means you will require extra rest, extra fluids and extra calories.  So if you can't afford to stick a nap in after your ride when you're under the weather, skip the ride and just opt for the nap.
And keep the intensity to a minimum! My personal preference is to focus on more strength-oriented riding/training so that I am not breathing heavy.

Since I'm battling a scratchy throat and stuffy nose, I've opted to continue riding this week -but at low intensity and with TONS of fluids and extra rest added.  I leave for a trip Sunday and do NOT want to be sick or get worse while I'm there!

Other OTC/herbal remedies I recommend: Kick Ass Immune (stuff kills me to take it, it tastes absolutely awful- but I think it works), Echinacea, Emergenc-C, hot water with lemon juice and honey, NyQuil (the bomb) and loads of fresh fruits for vitamins!  Also dressing up super warm (especially for indoor workouts) and "sweating it out" or standing in a hot steamy shower seems to help the head symptoms feel better/flush it out.

Bike Snob NYC post about commuting

We can definitely relate to this issue - bikeways not cleared of snow makes commuting VERY hard!  (This is such a funny article!)

Bikes are Fun. And this video is awesome.

Hi all. Here's a link to a post on my other biking blog. I hope the video makes you smile, and motivates you to get out on your bikes and be as hardcore as this kid.

Graffiti

MB's post yesterday with the bridge and graffiti reminded me of some cool pics I once nabbed with my bike and impressive graffiti.  Amazing the things you see and are able to enjoy from the bicycle seat ;)

The sun is back.

I think yesterday's warm weather spoiled me, as I was a little grouchy to get on my bike this morning. I just wasn't feeling so great, and it was chilly. Once I got going, I realized how much brighter it's getting in the mornings. When I reach the bridge by the skate park, the sun is up and the sky is gorgeous. It's starting to look and sound like spring, even though there are still cold days to come. I forgot to use Strava yet again today, but I'll try and get better!

The Perfect Day for Commuting!

Today was one of those amazing Colorado February days, a warm sunny day sprinkled in amidst the snow storms, that makes us SO glad we live here... the roads are clear, the temps in the 60s... It was truly the perfect day for bike commuting!

My commuter bike is a bike I got when I was 15 -- my first "real" bike, it was expensive at the time - a Chromoly MTB made by Bridgestone, purchased from Olympia Cycles in Omaha, Nebraska.  I am told now these bikes are collector's items so I've kept mine and it's perfect for popping out and about by bike.  Platform pedals, lots of gears, nice high handlebars... it's a great bike for commuting.

Today I donned my jeans, tennis shoes, jacket, helmet and bag and rode to the office for a meeting.  Such an awesome way to start my day! I was alert and energized from the ride in (just over 4 miles!).  After my meeting I got to enjoy a nice stiff tailwind at my back as I pedaled from office back home.  #glorious
